What is a Home Sleep Test?

A Home Sleep Apnea Test is a take home and wearable array of sensors focused on assessing your breathing while you sleep.   We use two types:  The Alice Night One and the General Sleep Z-Machine.   Both use a belt around your chest to listen for inspiration and expiration movements, indicating effort to breath.  Both use a small tube on your upper lip to listen for airflow.  Both use a thimble-like device on your finger to listen for oxygen levels.  Both have sensors that tell whether you are sleeping on your back, your sides, or your stomach.  As obstructive sleep apnea is typically worse when sleeping on your back (supine), the devices measure how much of your night’s sleep is supine.   The Z-Machine also listens to your brain waves to assess whether you are indeed asleep, and in which stage of sleep.  Obstructive sleep apnea is typically worst during REM sleep.
We will ask you to come into office to pick up the sleep apnea testing device.  We need to program it for you, size it for you, and teach you how to use it, including a hands-on and watching a video.  Patient has to be present to pick up device, but anyone can return the device after testing has completed.
Patient videors for both devices can be found below.
